#GardenWithJulia 2017 – Winter Sowing

Garden Graphic (3)

Hello there! I bet you didn’t think you’d see a gardening post so soon! Last year I came across an idea called “winter sowing.” Basically, you sow the seeds you want to grow in a plastic container and set it outside during the winter. In colder climates (those with freezing temps/snow), this is a way to get a jump on the gardening season. It’s hard to find much info on winter sowing in warm climates, mostly because I think there’s not really a need for it. BUT! I figure there’s no harm in trying, right? I already have all the materials, and if nothing comes from it, I’ve lost nothing, and gained experience I wouldn’t have if I didn’t try at all. Gardening with Julia – Final Video and 2016 Wrap-Up

Hello there! Sorry, I fell off my update and video wagon. I still want to wrap up the year and let you know that I am excited to try this again next year!

The rest of the year

The last update I gave, I had just begun planning my fall garden.

Also shortly after that update, an invasion of aphids set up camp in my garden and stunted the growth of the pepper, watermelon, and cantaloupe plants. I was able to regain control over the pepper plants, but the damage to the watermelon plant left it struggling at barely six inches tall, and no more growth ever happened. The cantaloupe plant was able to grow a little and produce one small cantaloupe, but the cooler weather set in before it could ripen.

I had zero luck with fall spinach, lettuce, and beets.

I did have some luck with some fall green beans and carrots, though. These carrots grew and looked a lot better than the others, and I think it may have been the different variety that made the difference.

I had planted some snow peas, and they grew tall and fast. I got about three delicious pods from them before they reached the state they are in now. Green but heavy and limp, not producing anything. Either I didn’t do well at watering (very possible) or the crazy Texas weather did a number on them. I’m excited to try them again, though! I love snow peas!

My pepper plants continued producing a good amount of time, and I got two roma tomatoes from one tomato plant. The rest of the plants didn’t survive the combination heat/bugs/novice gardener.

Things Learned

Squash bug hatchlings are crazy/gross looking. I’ve learned “that strange brown stick” is one way eggs are laid, you can be sure that I’ll be on the lookout for those!

The way I made my indoor greenhouse wasn’t good. Apparently, if I’d actually been using a grow light, the heat would have reflected off the foil and fried the seedlings.

I think I may need to try and mix my soil with something to make it a little lighter/better draining.

I need more plants of each type. I think that will help with pollination and the chances of something surviving the elements.

I actually really like growing flowers. They made me happy each time I saw them.

Gardening makes me exceptionally happy.

Looking Forward

While I’m not going to spell out my plans for 2017 just yet, I do want to say that I look forward to gardening again, and I hope you’ll continue to follow along! Maybe I’ll even become better at making/editing/posting the videos.

This Week’s Five!!!

  1. While I hate that summer (break) has come to a close, I function much better on a routine schedule, so I’m happy to be returning somewhat to “normal.”
  2. I also enjoy helping hubby decorate his classroom!
  3. No Man’s Sky.
  4. RAIN! Summer rain! It has brought cooler temperatures and more time outdoors, which I love. My garden’s enjoying it too. Makes it so much harder to resist the Autumn decorations in the store, though!
  5. I’m totally addicted to match 3 type games. Right now it’s Forest Rescue 2.

This Week’s Five!!!

ThisWeeksFiveBanner

Okay! It’s that time again. Time to recount a few things that made me happy–or I found interesting–in the past two (oops) weeks!!!

  1. I had a lot of fun gathering up my thoughts and finally posting my huge #GardenWithJulia update.
  2. My writing this year has been rather sporadic, and part of that is due to feeling overwhelmed or frustrated or lost. This post, however, speaks to me, and I hope to pick the pen up again soon.
  3. In the same container I found the frog living in, I’ve also found a toad. I’m not sure if the frog has been evicted or if the two are roommates, but it’s fun to observe.
  4. I’ve eaten enough sugar that I should probably take cover if it begins to rain…
  5. Speaking of rain, we got a little bit of summer rain recently. It was really nice.

So what’s something that has made you happy lately?

This Week’s Five!!!

Hello Friends,

My heart is heavy as I write this, and yours may be heavy too. This week has been a heartbreaking one. I know it is important to take time and grieve, to think and reflect, to talk, to take action. However, it is also my belief that in the dark times, especially, we must find and hold onto the good in our lives. As hard as it sometimes feels, life goes on. It doesn’t have to go on the same way that it did before, but it must go on. So here, in my personal space, I’m continuing on by highlighting things that have brought a smile to my face this week.

  1. My garden. It is my happy place. Friday I got a package in the mail with a new container I wanted to try. For a few hours while I had a mission–to get soil and fill up the container– I was able to be present in my own moment, to push anxieties from my mind and just feel the sun warming my neck and the dirt under my fingernails.
  2. I have really been enjoying posting picture updates on Instagram.
  3. There are at least two toads in our back yard that make a nightly appearance.
  4. There is good news for some friends and family members, and it makes me happy for them to be happy.
  5. I have acquired SO MANY EBOOKS this week. Expect a lengthy Stacking the Shelves for July 😉

What kind of light was in your life this week?

It’s time for another round of This Week’s Five!!! Here are five things that have made me happy in the past week.

  1. Getting a lot of yard work done.
  2. Cooking and eating really good food.
  3. My garden.
  4. My family.
  5. Since it’s July 4, I should say that I am very happy to live in a place where I have the rights and privileges that I do.

So, what about this week made you smile?

Hard to believe it’s been another week. So what’s been good?

  1. I found petunias growing in the (mostly untended) bed at the side of the house. Quite the surprise! And they are a deep purple color (which is my favorite) so that’s like bonus points for them.
  2. I’ve really been enjoying the evening hours outside. Taking time to water and weed and enjoy the cool-ish hours when the sun has begun its descent really makes me content.
  3. My nails are a beautiful coral color.
  4. Milkshakes!
  5. My garden seems to be doing pretty well.

So, what’s something that brought a smile to your face this week?

Gardening with Julia – Update 12

Garden Graphic (3)

This week’s update is a look at how the plants are growing.

Everything seems to be coming along pretty well. The biggest changes are that I now have baby strawberries and my first baby tomato of the season. There are also a couple of tiny jalepeños trying to get going, too. It’s HOT outside, I’ve been watering every-other day or so, but will start feeling of the soil to make sure so I’m not doing too much over watering. To get the scoop on the rest of the plants, check out the video above.
